Sequential similarity and comparison effects in category learning

چکیده
Order effects in category learning have been previously demonstrated. Specifically, alternation between exemplars of two categories has been shown to improve category learning and discrimination, compared to presenting exemplars of each category in separate blocks. However, the mechanisms underlying order effects are still not completely known. Remaining issues pertain to the relevance of within and between category similarities, and the role of comparing sequentially presented objects. We present two experiments: in Experiment 1 withinand between-category similarity are manipulated simultaneously with presentation schedule. In Experiment 2, alternation between categories is compared to two blocked conditions: one in which very similar stimuli are presented successively, and another in which they are dissimilar. Our results show a clear overall advantage of low similarity in categorization performance, but no effect of presentation schedule. Also, alternation between categories is shown to result in better performance than the blocked condition with more dissimilar stimuli.

Effects of interleaved and blocked study on delayed test of category learning generalization
Studying different concepts by frequently alternating between them (i.e., interleaving), improves discriminative contrast between different categories, while studying each concept in separate blocks emphasizes the similarities within each category. Interleaved study has been shown to improve learning of high similarity categories by increasing between-category comparison, while blocked study im...
متن کاملThe dynamics of scaling: a memory-based anchor model of category rating and absolute identification.
A memory-based scaling model--ANCHOR--is proposed and tested. The perceived magnitude of the target stimulus is compared with a set of anchors in memory. Anchor selection is probabilistic and sensitive to similarity, base-level strength, and recency. The winning anchor provides a reference point near the target and thereby converts the global scaling problem into a local comparison. An explicit...
متن کاملA Link Prediction Method Based on Learning Automata in Social Networks
Nowadays, online social networks are considered as one of the most important emerging phenomena of human societies. In these networks, prediction of link by relying on the knowledge existing of the interaction between network actors provides an estimation of the probability of creation of a new relationship in future. A wide range of applications can be found for link prediction such as electro...
متن کاملRecency effects as a window to generalization: separating decisional and perceptual sequential effects in category learning.
Accounts of learning and generalization typically focus on factors related to lasting changes in representation (i.e., long-term memory). The authors present evidence that shorter term effects also play a critical role in determining performance and that these recency effects can be subdivided into perceptual and decisional components. Experimental results based on a probabilistic category stru...
متن کاملReplacing Language: Children Use Non-Linguistic Cues and Comparison in Category Formation
Language is a powerful instrument for extracting relational information from stimuli. In a label extension task common labels invite comparison processes that help children focus on the more subtle relational similarity and away from the readily available perceptual similarity of the stimuli. The current experiment aims to explore whether non-linguistic representations of category membership ar...
